Michael Schur was inspired to create "A Man On the Inside" after watching the Chilean documentary "The Mole Agent"
Narrative
Charles, a retiree, gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a private detective and becomes a mole in an undercover investigation at a nursing home.
Remake of The Mole Agent (2020)
He says, "The Mole Agent" the documentary is powerful because it makes people feel something remarkably similar regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender, and I would describe that feeling in a very reductive way as, “I have to call my mom.” In our show, we tried to do a similar thing with the tone: Does our show essentially contribute to that feeling of wanting to call our moms?.
Even those who come for a less focused mystery should be captivated by the humanity that shows not only in the writing but also in the performances of all the cast members
I believe that a lot of fiction is inherently intended to make you think something along the lines of, “It was an honor to be a part of these fictional characters’ lives.” This show certainly fulfills that goal.
Props to all departments involved
While Netflix has been slow to renew series lately, I hope they live up to their potential and give them a season 2, because I hope to see more of these incredible characters’ journeys.
