Elizabeth Sparkle: There was a little substance abuse
Narrative
A top celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself. Ray Liotta was confirmed for the role in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could film his walls. Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the director’s “Thank You Notes” during the credits. The toilet mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly broken during the wall fight.
It could be great
Special thanks are expressed in credits numerous extras in the theater wall, which were full of blood. Featured in The 19:00 Project: September 20, 2024 (2024) episode. Pump It UpAuthor: Michael Hall, Leonardo Stella Performer: Earl Gregory Producer: Julien Degins. Getting old isn’t so bad.
I like cinematography
Fast frames, close-ups, suspenseful sounds and vivid colors are cool. Very slippery style. Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley are great in “Substance”. The story is really original in a way.
The first part is amazing
At times, it’s a bit reminiscent of Requiem for a Dream (but meaner and bloodier). For example, close-ups, quick differentiation between the two stories and, of course, disgusting injection marks. But the movie itself is pretty good. Maybe I’ll watch it again and skip the last 20 minutes.
What was the purpose?
The last sequence was not necessary at all. Are you creating a shocking effect or causing disgust? At this point, the movie completely lost my focus. Check out our list of exciting new films from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, New York and more.
