Narrative
An author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to find that the townspeople are under attack by a bloodthirsty vampire. Author Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that with the new version of Salem’s Lot, he wants to make vampires scary again. He wants to move away from the more attractive, romanticized undead that have plagued pop culture over the past quarter century thanks to all sorts of movies like Interview with the Vampire, Twilight, and The Vampire Diaries. As Ben reads old newspapers on microfilm at the library, one headline reads “Local Couple Victims of Drunk Driving.” The newspaper was supposedly printed in 1956, at a time when the term “under the influence” was not yet in use.
Still, it’s very mediocre
SundownWritten and performed by Gordon LightfootCourtesy of Warner RecordsWith permission from Warner Music Group Film & TV Licensing. First of all, I have to say that even if a Stephen King adaptation is weak, at least it’s still watchable. That’s a testament to King’s work. This film is lucky to be a King film.
But every aspect of the story’s development is abandoned
At the beginning of the film, I was very excited, everything was good, the atmosphere of unease was there and it felt very King. Pretty quickly, we get to a point where people have just disappeared from the town. It happens so fast and the remaining people just “know” that the cause is vampires. They also seem to know immediately who the main vampire is and it doesn’t make sense.
Also, no blood
I’ve seen incredibly bad horror films in my life and this one isn’t bad, it’s just too fast. In a vampire film. Too bad. If this had been an 8-10 episode miniseries, it would have worked.
The elements are there
The cast is there. I have to give credit to them sticking to the source material though, as it shows the creators understood what they were working with. The final season of What We Do in the Shadows is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month. Check out our October calendar for more!
